Triathlon WA confirms SunSmart IRONMAN 70.3 Busselton until 2021

Triathlon WA and IRONMAN Oceania are excited to announce the signing of a new licence agreement for SunSmart IRONMAN 70.3 Busselton which will see Triathlon WA continue to own and operate the event under licence agreement from IRONMAN until at least 2021.

The event has a rich history in the West Australian triathlon scene, having been staged by Triathlon WA as the WA State Long Course Championships since 1985. The event has been held annually in May in Busselton since 2002 and has grown from 600 competitors in the first year to a true multi-sport festival with more than 3,000 competitors competing across the event weekend.

Triathlon WA Executive Director, Peter Minchin said, this new agreement further consolidates the long-standing partnership of Triathlon WA, IRONMAN and the City of Busselton who have been long term supporters of IRONMAN 70.3 Busselton, IRONMAN Western Australia and IRONMAN 70.3 Western Australia.

“This new agreement will ensure Triathlon WA continues to deliver a world class IRONMAN 70.3 event that benefits the triathlon community in WA. As a not-for-profit, member owned sporting association, all profits from this event are used to further the development of the sport in Western Australia.”

“The WA triathlon community have been massive supporters of this event, with our clubs and members gearing their whole season around Busso. This support is reflected in our Long Course Legends, who continue to come back year after year, with Garry Itzstein aiming for his 29th State Long Course Championship finish this year,” Mr Minchin added.

IRONMAN Oceania Managing Director Dave Beeche said he is delighted that the new licencing agreement has been signed.

“Busselton is known throughout the world as one of the must visit destinations on the IRONMAN circuit and IRONMAN 70.3 Busselton is one of the favourite events on the calendar.”

“Not only does it deliver significant tourism and economic benefits to Busselton and the surrounding regions but it enjoy enormous community and competitor support. We look forward to working with both Triathlon WA and the City of Busselton in consolidating its future to 2021 and beyond,” he said.
